Music to Our Ears

Just like humans, we dogs can get stressed out and anxious about stuff, too.  Some dogs don't like loud, startling noises like thunder and fireworks.  Some dogs just don't like being alone, especially a new puppy.  Sometimes change of some sort can make us a bit uneasy.  There are lots of awesome products out there to help us, too.  Some of you have found the perfect remedy - maybe it's a thunder shirt or treat that has calming herbs.  But, if you've tried everything and haven't found your perfect solution, you might consider trying - musicWe sniffed out this cool website and thought we some of you might be interested - Through a Dog's Ear., co-founded by Lisa Spector, who is also a concert pianist, a Juilliard Graduate, and a Canine Music Expert.
There is so much info, we're not sure where to start, but basically Through a Dog's Ear offers musical compositions designed to calm us dogs under a variety of stressful situations, including riding in a car. The Music to Calm Your Canine Companion series helps by calming your nervous system.

Volumes I, II, & III

For you and your peeps

Music to Drive By

The Canine Noise Phobia is a different series that helps by treating and preventing sound sensitivities and noise phobias.  The Noise Phobia series is a collaboration between the creators of Through a Dog's Ear and Victoria Stillwell (It's Me or the Dog).

Now, we haven't used these CDs yet because, actually, we're not a really anxious bunch here, but we love music in our house and we know that we all get pretty relaxed when Dad plays his guitar for us.  We also love to use natural solutions when we can, so we think these CDs might be just the thing if you're still looking for a calming remedy.

Best of all, you can listen to lots of samples of the music before you purchase.  The CDs are available as downloads, too.

As an extra treat, you can get a free download on THIS PAGE (scroll to the bottom for details).

There is also a program for rescue shelters and organizations

Has anyone out there used these or heard any feedback?

I just FINALLY got over that FEAR about two months ago actually. I know it would have helped me to have soothing music playin so I wouldn't hear all the scary stuffs when I was ridin to places.

Hey Road Dogs!
Wow, what a great post! I bet lots of us could use this to help when we're upset. I tend to be the noise maker in my house and I sorta like the sound of my own bark! Maybe my peeps could use this. They sometimes get all bent outa shape when I rev up my barker! BOL

These look very interesting and we think we could use our own music in the car as well. Our mom says that she really thinks that Kid Rock works great but she is willing to try something different. BOL Sniffs, The HoundDogs

We haven't tried anything like music, but heard about the advantages earlier this year when we had to board some of the pack when we went to Michigan for 2 weeks. The boarding kennel we use has "doggie" music piped into the kennels for the relaxation of the dogs. In the evening they put the television on for a little while and then go back to the music overnight. It must work because everytime we walk in there we never hear any barking or noise coming from the kennel even though there were probably close to 30 or 40 dogs being boarded. We peeked in and all the dogs were very relaxed, sleeping, or playing quietly.

So interesting! I always wondered how dogs responded to music. I guess I've never noticed if there was music that they really liked, but definitely what they don't like: Miss M is terrified of fiddles!

That is really interesting. We will recommend this to our neighbor who's rescue dog has terrible anxiety.

We got offered a trial download before, and it wasn't anything bad, but none of us are big stressors, either!

I have heard about both of those and think its such a great idea.

Almost as great as the DVD I once rented that was a video FOR dogs...lots of close ups of big meaty bones, fire hydrants, and loud shlurpy noises as the dog in the video went to town on a great big chew. Watched it over Christmas one year with 5 dogs sprawled on the couch in rapt attention.

That reminded me of a CD mom once played (not the same ones) wot woz supposed to calm us dogs down and we all woz bouncing off the walls. Mom woz not amused, BOL. We thought was woz supposed to dance. Mebbe they changed the music since then.

We've used the Through A Dog's Ear CD for traveling in the car and I enjoyed it and I think Buster liked it too. Ty sleeps in the car no matter what, so I'm pretty sure he didn't even hear it.
