Little Dog on the Prairie

Dad just got his All Animals magazine from the HSUS and they had a big story that reminded us to post pics we had taken on our summer road trip of these guys -

Can you see him?

How about now?

Here's a hint

Apparently, all roads lead to Prairie Dog Town!

And they even have their own State Park.

The first pics were taken in our favorite town - Ennis, MT - right next to the post office.  This empty lot had several prairie dogs popping up.  But, they got kinda shy when Mom pulled out the ole camera and tried to take their pictures.

When we got on the road headed to the next place, we saw all these signs for Prairie Dog Town.  Lucky dogs!  They have a town all their own AND a State Park!  Bet they don't have to wear leashes!
Just saying . . .

But, we didn't have to stop in Prairie Dog Town to see tons of prairie dogs.  Mom spent like the next 1000  100 or so miles trying to get pics of prairie dogs.  Here's some of what she got.  We had to finally stop her and hide the camera.  We promise we won't show all of them!

Can you tell Mom is a little insane over the Prairie Dog?  Guess she likes any kind of dog :)  If you love Prairie dogs and you're interested in reading the HSUS article on Prairie Dogs, click here

I sniffed out that Prairie Dog in the furst one! I think I sniffed him out rite quickly coz they duss look a lot like skwerrells. Mebbe they be skwerrells disguised as Prairie Dogs so they could get their own town and park and stuffs. Your mom mite has blowned their cover with all those pikshures.

My mom just LUVS prairie dogs, too. She read this article not too long ago abouts how prairie dogs have their own complicated language that they teach to baby prairie dogs. She found it Most Fascinating and I bet your mom would like it, too: http://news.bbc.co.uk/earth/hi/earth_news/newsid_8493000/8493089.stm

Me - I just think they'd be fun to chase!

Wow, they are cute. I don't think I have ever seen one before. Are they rodents or dogs?

I am not kidding....as soon as I read the words "prairie dogs" I called my fiance' into the computer room and read every single word of your post to him and he was almost as impressed as I was that you saw soooo many prairie dogs at once! My fiance' lived out west for a number of years and he's one of those "I've been there, done that" kind of guys but I was over the moon about these dogs! I've been to zoos in New England where there's a prairie dog area and I cannot get over how darn cute they are! I wonder if I should just adopt one already or is that not allowed???? Is your mom going to adopt one and walk it all around town? heeeeheeee!
Thank you soooo much for sharing this post! I think you and your humans are super lucky to see prairie dogs, etc, on your road trip!

Oh, nice. Do you know we've never, ever seen a prairie dog in a natural setting. Well, Franklin and I have never seen one at all. The humans have seen them in a zoo is all. It's pretty nice that you got pictures of actual, free range prairie doggies.

lotsa licks, Lola

I love the wild prairie dogs; I've only ever seen them at the zoo. I think they're ok off-leash walking.
